Food Waste

The above information was taken from the WWF and WRAP document on The Water and Carbon Footprint of Household Food and Drink Waste in the UK (2011).

Water Use

Be aware of the choices you make everyday and their consequences on the environment. This image came from Good website which also has some other information documents on environmental things in addition to others.

This poster compares some typical choices that can be made when cooking/preparing dinner and their associated water footprints (both direct and indirect - the water required to produce the product).

SeaFood Guides

Knowing where your food comes from will allow you to select more sustainable, well managed food sources. These seafood selector and seafood choice guides can help you to make informed decisions about what type of seafood you should buy. For example if you want to make the best ecological choice when selecting salmon to eat you should buy Alaskan Wild salmon. On the other hand, you should avoid eating shark due to unsustainable harvesting.

Ecological Footprint

Your ecological footprint is determined by how much biodiversity, land, and water is needed to support your daily life. This number is then compared to how much is available. Many humans have a large ecological footprint becuase not only does producing the things you consume require resources and space, but these processes create waste (which consumes more space) and you physically inhabit some space.

Use the Earth Day Network Footprint Calculator to determine your ecological footprint

You can also try the zerofootprint carbon manager calculator or this Ecological Footprint Quiz or the WWF footprint Calculator

Water

- Water Footprint

Use the water footprint calculator to learn about both your direct and indirect water consumption. If you are American then you can also try this water footprint calculator.

If you are interested in checking out some other calculators then zerofootprint has a water calculator. It is a good idea to check out multiple calculators becuase they all take different things into consideration (the more complicated the more accurate your results are going to be, but it will take some time and thought to complete).
